Specific herbs and herbal remedies are known for their preventative qualities as it helps to enhance a weak immune system.

I use Herbs and Herbal Remedies to maintain a healthy mind and body because they are a natural treatment method and carry with them the least side effects.

The fact that a herbal remedies approach for health and well being has been used by mankind for many generations in all parts of the world speaks for the effectiveness of natural herbal remedies.

Specific herbs and herbal remedies are known for their preventative qualities that help to enhance a weak immune system.

When used properly herbal remedies are a beneficial and safe approach to alleviating disease by balancing the body’s own regulatory system and eliminating harmful toxins from the body.

Even though herbs are remarkably safe, we should remember that herbs and herbal remedies are a form of medicine and need to be used with care according to product directions.

Herbs are a naturally complex mix of vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates working in sync to bring about healing. Even though as much as 75% of patented prescription drugs are based on herbs the actual chemical structure of herbal medicinal plants is often a mystery and difficult to replicate in the pharmaceutical lab.

When deciding to use herbs and herbal remedies, medical consultation is always wise, especially when experiencing prolonged serious medical problems.

It is also extremely urgent that you only purchase herbs and herbal remedies from creditable suppliers.

I purchase herbal remedies from Native Remedies with confidence .

I consider them a safe and creditable company because of the high standards they have set for themselves.

A recent unbiased review of Native Remedies was published by Mark John Hiemstra.

“Native Remedies sell herbal and homeopathic remedies in a variety of categories. All of their products are manufactured according to strict guidelines, and only high-quality raw ingredients. You’ll be pleased to know that each of their solutions is manufactured in an FDA-registered pharmaceutical facility with a team of experts close at hand to ensure that the final product is safe and effective.” (Native Remedies review, nativeremedies.com coupons, http://www.healthproductreviews.com/stores/native-remedies/ (Accessed April 30, 2012)

This Could Be Even BIGGER than the Vitamin D Discovery…

Previous

Next

By Dr. Mercola

Vitamin K may very well be “the next vitamin D” as research continues to illuminate a growing number of benefits to your health.

It is probably where vitamin D was ten years ago with respect to its appreciation as a vital nutrient that has far more benefits than was originally recognized.

And, according to Dr. Cees Vermeer, one of the world’s top researchers in the field of vitamin K, nearly everyone is deficient in vitamin K – just like most are deficient in D.

Vitamin K measurements in blood plasma can be done accurately, but the results are not necessarily helpful because they mainly reflect what you ate yesterday. Because of this, we will have to trust Dr. Vermeer on his assessment that most are too deficient to reap all of its health benefits. Vitamin K researchers across the world will acknowledge him as a leader in this field.

Most people get enough K from their diets to maintain adequate blood clotting, but NOT enough to offer protection against the following health problems—and the list is growing:
•Arterial calcification, cardiovascular disease and varicose veins
•Osteoporosis
•Prostate cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer and leukemia
•Brain health problems, including dementia, the specifics of which are still being studied

Vitamin K comes in two forms, and it is important to understand the differences between them before devising your nutritional plan of attack.

The Two Basic Types of Vitamin K

Vitamin K can be classified as either K1 or K2:
1.Vitamin K1: Found in green vegetables, K1 goes directly to your liver and helps you maintain a healthy blood clotting system. (This is the kind of K that infants need to help prevent a serious bleeding disorder.) It is also vitamin K1 that keeps your own blood vessels from calcifying, and helps your bones retain calcium and develop the right crystalline structure.
2.Vitamin K2: Bacteria produce this type of vitamin K. It is present in high quantities in your gut, but unfortunately is not absorbed from there and passes out in your stool. K2 goes straight to vessel walls, bones, and tissues other than your liver. It is present in fermented foods, particularly cheese and the Japanese food natto, which is by far the richest source of K2.

Vitamin K1 can convert to K2 in your body, but there are some problems with this, which I will discuss shortly. As a supplement, K1 is less expensive, which is why it’s the form used for neonates.

Making matters even more complex, there are several different forms of vitamin K2.

MK8 and MK9 come primarily from dairy products. MK4 and MK7 are the two most significant forms of K2, and act very differently in your body:
•MK4 is a synthetic product, very similar to vitamin K1, and your body is capable of converting K1 into MK4. However, MK4 has a very short half-life of about one hour, making it a poor candidate as a dietary supplement. After reaching your intestines, it remains mostly in your liver, where it is useful in synthesizing blood-clotting factors.
•MK7 is a newer agent with more practical applications because it stays in your body longer; its half-life is three days, meaning you have a much better chance of building up a consistent blood level, compared to MK4 or K1. MK7 is extracted from the Japanese fermented soy product called natto. You could actually get loads of MK7 from consuming natto as it is relatively inexpensive, and is available in most Asian food markets. Few people, however, tolerate it’s smell and slimy texture.

Let’s take a look at what scientific studies are showing us about vitamin K2.

Vitamin K Research has Come a Long Way

In 2008, a German research group discovered that vitamin K2 provides substantial protection from prostate cancer[1], which is one of the leading causes of cancer among men in the United States. According to Dr. Vermeer, men taking the highest amounts of K2 have about 50 percent less prostate cancer.

Research results are similarly encouraging for the benefits of vitamin K to your cardiac health:
•In 2004, the Rotterdam Study, which was the first study demonstrating the beneficial effect of vitamin K2, showed that people who consume 45 mcg of K2 daily live seven years longer than people getting 12 mcg per day[2].
•In a subsequent study called the Prospect Study[3], 16,000 people were followed for 10 years. Researchers found that each additional 10 mcg of K2 in the diet results in 9 percent fewer cardiac events.

Preliminary findings also suggest that vitamin K can help protect you from brain disease. However, it is too early to say exactly what types of damage it prevents—and how—but it is an area of intense interest to vitamin K scientists right now.

Vitamin K2 is CRUCIAL in Preventing Osteoporosis

The evidence suggests that vitamin K2 is essential for your bone health, but it is a nutrient the vast majority of you do not get in adequate amounts from your diet.

How does vitamin K lead to bone health?

Osteocalcin is a protein produced by your osteoblasts (cells responsible for bone formation), and is utilized within the bone as an integral part of the bone-forming process. However, osteocalcin must be “carboxylated” before it can be effective. Vitamin K functions as a cofactor for the enzyme that catalyzes the carboxylation of osteocalcin.

Vitamin K2 has been found to be a far more effective “activator” of osteocalcin than K1.

There has been some remarkable research about the protective effects of vitamin K2 against osteoporosis:
•A number of Japanese trials have shown that vitamin K2 completely reverses bone loss and in some cases even increases bone mass in people with osteoporosis[4].
•The pooled evidence of seven Japanese trials show that vitamin K2 supplementation produces a 60 percent reduction in vertebral fractures and an 80 percent reduction in hip and other non-vertebral fractures[5].
•Researchers in the Netherlands showed that vitamin K2 is three times more effective than vitamin K1 in raising osteocalcin, which controls the building of bone[6].

Although your body can convert K1 into K2, studies show that the amount of K2 produced by this process alone is insufficient. Even if you are consuming enough K1, your body uses most of it to make clotting factors, leaving little remaining for your bones.

In other words, your liver preferentially uses vitamin K1 to activate clotting factors, while most of your other tissues preferentially use K2.

Vitamin K2 has also been found to offer you other benefits—besides your bones!

Vitamin K2 Lowers Your Cancer Risk

As mentioned earlier, we are also learning that vitamin K2 has a major role in preventing cancer.

The recent European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study[7], published in the March 2010 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found high intake of vitamin K2—not K1—leads to reduced cancer risk, as well as a thirty percent lower risk of dying from cancer[8].

A study funded by the National Cancer Institute found that vitamin K2 might help reduce the risk for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Mayo Clinic researchers discovered that people with the highest intake of vitamin K2 had a 45 percent lower risk for this type of cancer, compared to those with the lowest vitamin K2 intake[9].

Scientists attribute this to the important role that vitamin K2 plays in inhibiting inflammatory cytokines, which are related to this type of lymphoma, and vitamin K’s role the lifecycle of your cells.

Are You Getting Enough Vitamin K from Your Diet?

Eating lots of green vegetables will increase your vitamin K1 levels naturally, especially:
•Kale
•Spinach
•Collard greens
•Broccoli
•Brussels sprouts

You can obtain all the K2 you’ll need (about 200 micrograms) by eating 15 grams of natto daily, which is half an ounce. However, natto is generally not pleasing to the Westerner’s palate, so the next best thing is a vitamin K2 supplement.

But remember, you must always take your vitamin K supplement with fat since it is fat-soluble and won’t be absorbed without it.

Although the exact dosing is yet to be determined, Dr. Vermeer recommends between 45 mcg and 185 mcg daily for adults. You must use caution on the higher doses if you take anticoagulants, but if you are generally healthy and not on these types of medications, I suggest 150 mcg daily.

Fortunately, you don’t need to worry about overdosing on K2—people have been given a thousand-fold “overdose” over the course of three years, showing no adverse reactions (i.e., no increased clotting tendencies).

The Synergistic Effects Between Vitamin K and Vitamin D

It’s important to realize that vitamin K does not work alone. It needs collaborators—and vitamin D is an important one.

These two agents work together to increase MGP, or Matrix GLA Protein, which is the protein that is responsible for protecting your blood vessels from calcification. In fact, MGP is so important that it can be used as a laboratory measure of your vascular and cardiac status.

The results of human clinical studies suggest that concurrent use of vitamin K2 and vitamin D may substantially reduce bone loss.

If you are concerned about your bones, you must balance this nutritional triad:
1.Vitamin D
2.Vitamin K
3.Calcium

Increasing calcium is good for your bones but not so beneficial for your arteries, which can become calcified, but vitamin K protects your blood vessels from calcifying when in the presence of high calcium levels.

So you really must pay attention to the synergism of all three of these nutrients if you want to optimize your benefits.

I am convinced we are seeing just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to vitamin K and its many valuable functions in your health. It’s truly an exciting area in nutritional science today.

In the meantime it is my STRONG encouragement to make sure you find some regular source of vitamin K2. This will mean eating about four ounces of fermented cheese a day (preferably raw) or taking a high quality vitamin K2 supplement.

It is my strong belief that in ten years time there will be as much passion and appreciation for this stealth vitamin as we have for vitamin D today.

Herbal remedies improve whole body system

Herbal remedies promote the well know concept of weight loss and weight management plans stating that it is better to lose weight slowly and naturally. Respected health sources support wisest weight reduction plans that include diet regulation, lifestyle changes and exercise.

Herbal remedies are designed to sustain your body balance while you make use of good eating habits and exercise. Herbs online recommends that you read and understand the information provided whether you are considering the use the diet drug Alli or natural herbal remedies for regular weight loss. Make sure to read the ingredients and understand their purpose as well as any side effects that may occur.

Contrary to all good health recommendations there is still a trend in the consumer market to endorse any supplement, diet or program that may assure quick weight loss with minimum effort. The demand and popularity of such a product has led the FDA to endorse the first over-the-counter sale of a weight loss pill – Alli.

Herbal remedies promise healthy weight loss

In contrast to quick weight loss promises natural herbal remedies do not promise fast weight loss, they promise healthy weight loss. This is because they support the use a dual modality approach and the ingredients are carefully selected to build and repair the body systems that cause ill health from obesity. Native Remedies, a well known natural herbal remedies manufacturer states that “As we know that natural medicine works best in combination (herbal, homeopathic, flower essences and tissue salts), Native Remedies promotes a dual modality approach to provide fast-acting symptomatic relief and improve body function for long-term health. While each of our natural remedies works well on its own to relieve a particular symptom or address a specific body function, a combination approach provides a complete, safe and highly effective solution to combat physical, emotional or psychological health problem(s) and restore balance in the body.”

Donald Hensrud, M.D. Mayo Clinic staff answers the question What is Alli?

“Alli is the reduced-strength version (60 milligrams vs. 120 milligrams) of orlistat (Xenical), a prescription drug to treat obesity. It’s approved for over-the-counter sale to overweight adults 18 years and older. Alli is meant to be used in conjunction with a low-calorie, low-fat diet and regular exercise.”

Herbs online notes that the non prescription drug Alli is not the drug “orlistat” that is available only by prescription for obese patients; it is a reduced strength drug that is being promoted as a non prescription diet pill.

Allis Diet Pills – Side Effects and Safety Recommendations

It should also be clear that Alli is not approved for use by people under the age of eighteen years of age.

The unhealthy preoccupation with a fast cure for obesity has reached such limits that there is a high demand for the drug. The resultant euphoria is making most customers overlook an extremely important aspect associated with medicine. In their craze, people forget that any drug, whether prescribed or not, should involve careful scrutiny of how it works, its side effects and the safety guidelines printed on the instruction sheet.

Although the supplement Alli is backed by manufacturing and marketing giants of the pharmaceutical industry, there are conditions under which the drug is not recommended. As is always the case, there are also some unrecorded side effects due to interaction with other drugs or a preexisting undiagnosed disease.

Fewer side effects from herbal remedies

Healthy herbal remedies offer weight loss with natural ingredients that avoid many of the risks of drug type diet pills. You are also cautioned to be aware that natural herbal supplements may, in rare cases, cause side effects that you need to be aware of. Those side effects may include nausea, dizziness or headaches. As with any substance that causes side effects you are advised to stop taking the supplement and /or reduce the dosage.

How the diet drug Alli works

The side effects of the Alli diet pill are related to the manner in which the drug acts. It suppresses the absorption of fatty acids and ensures the disposal of dietary components that are not taken up by the digestive system.

Specifically, the side effects of the Alli diet pill are:

- Loose or oily stools with bad odor.

- Flatulence, which can cause embarrassment as well as discomfort.

- Frequent and unpredictable bowel movement that can sometimes be out of control if the patient persists on a high fat content diet.

- A reduction in absorption of fat soluble vitamins.

The side effects of Alli can be minimized if the fat content of diet is reduced to 15 grams of fat per meal. The theory is simple, if there is less fat to absorb then there will be less left over. At the same time the drug does not work unless some amount of fat is consumed. On the other hand, if you are on a low carbohydrate diet that allows fat consumption, Alli is liable to cause you more harm and discomfort than you expect.

How herbal remedies work

How herbal remedies work
Herbs are concentrated foods, with the ability to address both the symptoms
and causes of a problem. As nourishment, herbs can offer the body nutrients it
does not always receive, either from poor diet, or environmental deficiencies in
the soil and air. As medicine, herbs are essentially body balancers,
that work with the body functions, so that it can heal and regulate itself.
Herbs are foundation nutrients, working through the glands,
nourishing the body’s deepest and most basic elements, such as the brain,
glands and hormones. Results will seem to take much longer. But this fact only
shows how herbs actually work, acting as support to control
and reverse the cause of a problem, with more permanent effect.

The Pluses and Minuses of the Alli Diet Pill

The Alli diet pill is a lower potency of the prescription weight loss drug, Xenical, (also known as Orlistat). Clinical trials of Xenical reported an average weight loss of 12.4 pounds over a period of six months. Clinical trials also indicated that the drug is stable and effective, leading to significant weight loss by reducing absorption of fatty acids and limiting calorie intake.

The drug restricts the production of the enzyme that breaks up fat. This instantly results in lesser calorie intake as the entire fat content cannot be converted into fatty acids. It is thus possible to control weight by reducing the amount of fatty acids retained by the body. As the Alli Diet Pill has a lower potency of Xenical, it controls weight loss by adjustments in dosage.

Any drug that interferes with the natural metabolic process has a flip side to it.

There are some issues that are being ignored by consumers caught in the recent euphoria. The main reason for the euphoria is the approval for over-the-counter sale of this drug by the FDA. Since no prescription is now required to obtain this drug, anyone can lay their hands on it without the need for a prescription from a medical doctor. Herbs online recommends the following caution If you take Alli be sure to contact your doctor if you experience signs and symptoms, such as weakness or fatigue, fever, jaundice, or brown urine, which could indicate liver injury.

The alli drug pill is not known to work unless there is some amount of fat in your diet. On the other hand if fat intake is not restricted, the results can be fairly embarrassing and uncomfortable.

As Alli restricts break up of fat, the remaining fats find their way out through stools in their undigested stage. This results in bad smelling oily stools. Another manner in which the drug can cause embarrassment is excessive flatulence. Although a natural and harmless release, flatulence can get extremely embarrassing since it is coupled with partial control over bowels.

If you already have an irritable bowel syndrome where diarrhea is a predominant symptom, Alli diet pills can greatly add to your existing problems . Some Vitamins have a fatty content. The restricted absorption of fats can potentially cause Vitamin deficiency.

The unprecedented popularity of Alli is being ascribed to the growing incidence of obesity. For many, overweight is more of a personal and cosmetic concern than a health issue. Alli used for non-genuine weight loss, simply to get a wafer thin modeling figure, is tantamount to just inviting side effects.

The reported weight loss in clinical trials was achieved in conjunction with other healthy weight loss plans and not only with the use of Alli. Moreover, the placebo patients too lost half of what those on Alli did. And this happened over a period of six months. You can still chose to stick to safe natural weight loss remedies and lose weight naturally.

Understanding Basal Metabolism and Weight Loss

Metabolism is a set of organic processes that allows growth, reproduction and maintenance of bodily structures in all organisms, including humans. It is necessary for maintaining life. Part of what you eat is converted to energy (measured in calories), which is expended for performing body functions.

Even as you sleep, body functions like respiration, blood circulation and maintenance of body temperature must go on. The rate at which these organic processes are performed while you rest or are inactive is known as the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Accurate measurement of BMR is possible only when the sympathetic nervous system is not stimulated. Therefore, in most cases it is the resting metabolic rate (RMR) that is more commonly used since it is easier to measure.

The Basal Metabolism Rate and the Resting Metabolism Rate dictate the rate at which you expend energy while you are asleep or resting. They depend largely upon a combination of factors like genetics, environment, gender, age, weight, height, body fat percentage and diet. They reduce as one grows older.

The BMR is regulated by Thyroxin, a hormone produced by thyroid glands. This is done by controlling the level of oxidation of cells. Depending on the level of Thyroxin produced, the body uses up high or low levels of energy for the various internal functions of the body. Since the thyroid gland regulates the Basal Metabolism Rate, an under active thyroid leads to weight gain.

It may surprise you to know that the BMR and RMR are responsible for expending up to 70% of the total calories consumed in a day. It is hypothecated that if a person knows the amount of energy from carbohydrates, proteins and fats that is required for maintaining life accurately, a diet that matches the requirements for daily activities can be chosen. Such knowledge can allow you to concentrate on eating the right kind of food in the right proportion rather than just limiting calories.

A slow BMR and RMR can defeat all attempts that you make to lose weight, therefore any weight loss plan that you consider must be based on a balanced diet that includes foods from all food groups. It should also recommend exercises that help in burning excess fat. An understanding of the foods that an individual requires to manage weight also needs to be based on the specific BMR and RMR of the individual. Herbs online recommends natural herbal products and the dual modality approach to dieting. Natural herbal remedies provide you with healthy nutrients without the risks that drugs carry. You can lose weight and stay healthy with a carefully planned diet, exercise and natural herbal supplements.

Such a concept is currently missing from the current regime of almost all dieting programs that claim to be healthy weight loss plans. Most diet plans focus on eliminating or including one of the many food groups from the diet – be it carbohydrates or fats or proteins.

Diet is Individual

Given that no drug, for weight loss or otherwise, is without side effects and that natural weight loss options should ideally be the first option, we should understand that a natural approach can ensure weight loss and a natural cleansing of the body at the same time.

Herbs online suggests that using only natural foods and herbal remedies along with exercise is an option that leads to overall health improvement and enables your system to lose weight and gain strength at the same time.

To develop a diet plan one needs to understand the exact BMR and RMR of an individual accompanied by an understanding of the exact number of calories that each food provides.

The difficulty is that medical science is still far from being able to calculate either of these two essential elements that can help in devising a perfect diet plan for an individual.

Whether you are looking to lose weight, tone up, or simply make your body healthier, if you purchase herbs online, you are making a healthier choice for a better quality of green teas than if you select the green teas from your nearby superstore.

Green teas popular herbs and health alternative

Currently popular herbs in the form of green teas at your nearby grocery superstore goes by the name of Hoodia tea.

Hoodia with green tea is a green tea herb supplement which is used universally not only to help with weight loss and physically improve the body, but as well to prevent and even cure diseases.

The ingredient hoodia itself is not green tea herbs .

Hoodia is only one ingredient and its only purpose is to decrease appetite. The green tea herbs extract is the only valuable health ingredient in this product.

The way that Hoodia with green tea works is that it uses the green tea extract to clear your body of any toxins, so that you may almost immediately begin to feel results after starting on the product since you will feel refreshed and healthier. Pure green tea is a very healthy alternative to other popular drinks.

It is all the antioxidants that are present from the green tea extract that helps your body develop a healthy immune system. Used as a preventative method Green tea extract works against diseases such as the common cold, the flu, and serious ones, such as cancer. It is definitely a drink of choice for those seeking a healthy immune system.

You must understand though the green tea extract in Hoodia Tea let alone any other mass produced grocery store product – is not concentrated enough to actually cure or prevent something as serious as cancer. Yes, there are claims that it has been proven to help treat cancer and those who take green tea extract regularly are considered to be at much less risk of getting cancer later on in their life.

Buying herbs online- How will you know if a herbal product is pure?

There are widespread reports of counterfeit hoodia products. Mike Adams of News Target, estimates that 80% of hoodia products are contaminated or counterfeit. It’s impossible to know if a hoodia product contains pure hoodia and the active ingredient, unless it has been tested by an independent laboratory.
The best answer to being safe is to always err on the cautious side. Whether purchasing at a herb store or purchasing herbs online make certain you are dealing with a creditable herb manufacture. We have done that for you at http://herbsonlinehere.com by ensuring that our sponsors are accredited long term businesses and they comply with food and health regulations set by government.

Green Tea Options

There are many options that you have in this regards to the selection of green teas, you have many other choices as well. Green tea pills, cold and hot green tea drinks, and green tea supplements of almost any shape and color are but a few of the options . One such option is a green tea product from Native remedies. Bio-Oxidate Defense™

Ingredients of Bio-Oxidate Defense™

Bio-Oxidate Defense contains a selection of herbs high in antioxidant properties that are well-known for their supportive function in maintaining healthy cellular processes. It is a 100% herbal formula and contains the following ingredients in therapeutic dosage: Grape seed extract, Green tea, Rooibos, Resveratrol.

Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis)

Used as a supportive tonic and has powerful anti-oxidant properties, mainly due to its superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetic properties. SOD is an enzyme in the body that is especially designed to neutralize unstable oxygen molecules (free radicals) as soon as they occur, and systemic SOD can therefore help to promote health. (Standley L, Winterton P, Marnewick JL, et al. “Influence of processing stages on antimutagenic and antioxidant potentials of rooibos tea”. J Agric Food Chem 2001;49:114–7). D1997;11(Suppl. 3):128–30.)

Grape seed extract (vitis vinifera)

Is a potent natural source of proanthocyanidins and of pycnogenols a naturally powerful antioxidant. The way in which these versatile compounds are distinct from flavonoids is their simple chemical structure, which allows them to be readily absorbed into the bloodstream. OPC’s are also active against both fat and water-soluble oxidants. Simonetti P, Ciappellano S, Gardana C, Bramati L, Pietta P. “Procyanidins from Vitis vinifera seeds: in vivo effects on oxidative stress”. J Agric Food Chem. 2002 Oct 9;50(21):6217-21). Grape seed extract has also been investigated for its affect on free radicals and thus its promotion of health. Bagchi D, Bagchi M, Stohs SJ, Das DK, Ray SD, Kuszynski CA, Joshi SS, Pruess HG. “Free radicals and grape seed proanthocyanidin extract: importance in human health and disease prevention”. Toxicology. 2000 Aug 7;148(2-3):187-97.)

Green tea (Camellia sinensis)

Is the tea plant, the plant species whose leaves and leaf buds are used to produce tea. White tea, green tea, oolong and black tea are all harvested from this species, but are processed differently to attain different levels of oxidation. Green tea contains levels of substances called catechin polyphenols, known to possess strong antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, antitumorigenic, and even antibiotic properties.

Resveratrol

Is a naturally occurring hydroxystilbene identified in over seventy plant species.

These ingredients combined in the product Bio-Oxidate Defense support the body’s ability to fight harmful free radicals, thereby helping to maintain routine healthy performance of bodily systems.

Herbs online provides you with information regarding the use of natural herbal remedies for childhood depression .

Although depression is as licit a disorder as any other physiological problem, the diagnosis of the disorder is not as clear. Medical science still does not know much about the brain, its functioning and the reasons behind why it suddenly starts malfunctioning. So much so, that way back in the 1950’s it was only by accident that research stumbled across the antidepressant properties of certain drugs.

The discovery may have been due in part to homeopathy practices using natural herbal remedies to manage feelings of sadness .

There is not too much difference between the difficulties faced while diagnosing adult and child depression . Both are equally problematic.

All that science knows is that there is some element of predisposition to depression in some children due to factors like hereditary mental illnesses, emotional, physical and sexual abuse or an early loss of a parent. There are also indications that child depression may result from chemical imbalances as some infants show depressive symptoms well before these factors can come into play. As such, it is much more important to be able to identify the illness rather than discussing the causes behind it.

Knowing the symptoms of child or teen depression is pertinent because certain disruptive behaviors and mood swings can be easily confused as symptoms of the growing up process.

Some of the conspicuous symptoms of child depression that can be helped with carefully selected and monitored herbal remedies

─ Incessant feeling of sadness, irritability, despair or worthlessness.

─ Inability to enjoy previously enjoyed activities.

─ Avoiding company of friends and others.

─ Crying spells.

─ Sleeping disorders – either too much sleeping or lack of sleep.

─ Lethargy, fatigue or change in activity level: either too lazy or hyperactive.

─ Feeling tired all the time.

─ Functional physical problems that are difficult to diagnose, like headaches or stomach aches.

─ Frequent thoughts or mention of death or suicide.

─ Difficulty in concentrating on the job at hand, procrastination or avoiding responsibilities.

─ Anger, rage or disruptive behavior at school or outside.

─ Sudden drop in school grades

Bipolar disorder (BPD) is a mental disorder that is characterized by episodes of mania and depression. A child suffering from BPD is likely to show abrupt mood swings, prolonged periods of hyperactivity, erratic temper tantrums or boastful talks about self or abilities.

There is a strong possibility of such depressive symptoms with certain related disorders like ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder).

Teenage girls, on the other hand, are more prone to exhibit eating disorders. Any teen depression help must take ensure that a holistic diagnoses is made so that the treatment can be customized.

In the modern society, teen depression has become a reality and cannot be shrugged off easily. The problem exists and should be tackled with a bold face rather than turning the proverbial blind eye. Competition today is felt by children and adults alike. While an adult may worry about performance and pay packets and appraisals, children face the pressure of parental expectations in terms of good grades and performance in sports.

Native remedies product MindSoothe Jr. is a 100% safe, non-addictive, natural herbal remedies, especially formulated by a Clinical Psychologist for children’s emotions.

Herbs online provides you with information regarding the use of natural herbal remedies

When examining causes of depression, we would be remiss if we didnt discuss studies of depression the potential for using natural herbal remedies.

Many theories about emotions have been developed over the years.

Many with different hypothesis have been provided by various psychologists. Researchers have tried to establish a somatic, empirical, evolutionary, and cognitive connection between emotions the resultant behaviors.

Emotion is an unconscious process.

Modern psychologists suggest that emotions are a state where the brain attributes a positive or negative value to external and internal stimuli. The emotions, in most cases furnish a plan of action. Simply stated, there is a quick and automatic assessment by the nervous system that brings in appropriate actions based on subjective experiences. For example, if you are being threatened, the rising fear directs the brain to drop whatever you are doing and find routes of escape.

Emotions are a subject matter of emotional neuroscience. This science tries to understand various disorders connected to emotions. It is now believed that chemical imbalances and lesser availability of neurotransmitters are responsible for emotional disorders like anxiety and depression. Neurotransmitters are organic substances that occur in neural activity and transmit nerve impulses across a synapse.

Neurotransmitters like dopamine, noradrenaline and serotonin increase or decrease the brain’s activity level. Specifically, serotonin is involved in sleep, depression and memory. It is for this reason that the first prescription for depression is most likely a SSRI, selective serotonin uptake inhibitor.

Low serotonin, however, is not the cause, but simply a synonym of depression. What actually causes serotonin levels to drop or disturb the chemical balances is not known to medical science despite extensive research on the subject. Alternative health practicioners believe that chemical imbalances can be corrected with the use of well studied natural herbal remedies. We believe it is worth considering as an alternative to harsh chemicals.

The maximum that research provides us with are possible reasons like genetics and improper brain development behind a drop in serotonin levels and chemical imbalances. Another theory that has gained plausibility is that our own thoughts and behaviors affect serotonin levels. If you are negative in your approach and do not involve in activities that give pleasure, your serotonin levels are likely to drop.

It is hard to believe but the hypothesis is based on the fact that whatever we do and think happens due to production, release and absorption of chemicals like hormones, neurotransmitters, and amino acids. When we have to deal with stress over a prolonged period, it forces the brain to cycle through serotonin more rapidly. This is mainly done to control stress and overall mood thus reducing the availability of serotonin. Similarly, when we feel positive there is a better availability of serotonin.

Emotions are considered to be related to brain areas that direct our attention, motivate our behavior and determine the significance of what is going around us.

Find Great Herbs to See You Through Winter

Herbal remedies are available to us from many sources during a season in which mood altering emotions abound.
Nature-lovers who notice the daily growth of a particular tree or changes in a flowerbed may view winter as a dormant time. Plants that no longer exist in their spring and summer forms become the focus of planning for next spring’s garden and perhaps a sign that humans, too, should rest.
However, the experience of people who lived centuries ago and the work of modern researchers let us enjoy herbs year-round. Sold at natural and health-food stores in bulk, dried herbs are also available in the form of capsules, tablets, and tinctures.

Herbs online is a great source of information regarding natural herbal remedies.
Below you will find seven of the best herbal medicines to have on hand now. The information is adapted from 101 Medicinal Herbs(Interweave Press, 1998) by Steven Foster, an Herbs for Health editorial adviser and, with Albert Leung, Ph.D., author of Encyclopedia of Common Natural Ingredients (Wiley, 1996), and many other books about herbal health.

Insomnia-Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)

Chamomile is the dried flower head of an annual member of the aster family. German chamomile, the species most often sold on the U.S. market, is grown in Hungary, the Czech Republic,Slovakia, Germany, Argentina, and Europe. It’s been used for centuries as a mild sleep aid, and scientists attribute its gentle sedative activity to alpha-bisabolol, a constituent found in its oil.
Up to six capsules containing 300 to 400 mg of dried chamomile can be taken daily, or 10 to 40 drops of a tincture three times daily. A tea is made by steeping 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of dried flowers in a cup of hot water and taken three times daily to attain a calm state and help you sleep.
People who are allergic to other members of the aster family, including ragweed, may be allergic to chamomile.

Energy-Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng)

In a 2,000-year-old herbal, Shen Nong wrote that ginseng is good for quieting the spirit, curbing the emotions, brightening the eyes, enlightening the mind, increasing wisdom, and, with continuous use, “longevity with light weight.”
Since the 1960s, scientists have extensively studied Asian ginseng. At least seven European clinical studies show that standardized extracts increase respiratory performance, alertness, power of concentration, and grasp of abstract concepts. A ¬controlled study in France that evaluated complaints of patients suffering from “functional fatigue,” such as being worn out or having an empty feeling, showed that people who took ginseng experienced less ¬fatigue, anxiety, and poor concentration compared with people who took a placebo.
Ginseng contains more than eighteen active chemicals called ginsenosides, whose behavior in lab tests matches the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) description of the effect the herb has on the body. In Germany, Asian ginseng products are allowed to be labeled as tonics to treat fatigue, reduced work capacity, and lack of concentration.
A recommended dose is up to four 500 to 600 mg capsules of the dried or steamed root daily; for standardized products, 100 mg one or two times a day. To make a tea, use 3 teaspoons of dried or sliced root per cup of water. Place the herb and water in a saucepan and simmer, covered, for 45 minutes. Strain. Drink a cup two or three times a day.
Some people have experienced overstimulation or gastrointestinal upset when taking Asian ginseng, and some women have reported breast tenderness or menstrual problems after long-term use. Avoid ginseng if you have high blood pressure or if you’re pregnant.
Eye strain
Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus)

Bilberry is a relative of the blueberry. A small shrub with sweet black berries, ¬it grows in northern Europe, western Asia, and the Rocky Mountains of North America.
Bilberry was a popular medicine among sixteenth-century Europeans, who used the leaves to fight inflammation and in¬fection. They also used the herb to treat ¬diarrhea, prevent scurvy (a vitamin C deficiency), and disinfect mouth sores.
During World War II, pilots in the British Royal Air Force reported improved night vision after eating bilberry jam. During the 1960s, Italian and French scientists investigated these reports to learn whether bilberries could improve vision. As a result, preparations of bilberry fruit are used in Europe today to enhance poor microcirculation and thus improve eye ailments such as night blindness and diabetic retinopathy. Research shows that pigments in bilberry called anthocyanosides strengthen capillaries by protecting them from free radical damage and stimulating the formation of healthy connective tissue. However, most studies on bilberry have involved animals or only a small number of people.
A typical daily dose is two or three capsules standardized to contain 25 percent ¬anthocyanosides. No side effects or interactions with other drugs have been reported.

Circulation-Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)

Ginkgo products come from the leaves of the only surviving member of the ginkgo family, a species that has existed for more than 200 million years. Most commercial leaf production is from plantations in South Carolina, France, and China.
Ginkgo leaf has been cultivated since the fifteenth century inChina, where the leaves were used to “benefit the brain” and treat lung disorders, cough and asthma symptoms, and diarrhea. Today, ginkgo is one of the best-selling herbal medicines in Europe.
Most research focuses on using ginkgo to increase circulation to the extremities and the brain, and more than 400 scientific studies support its use for this. Scientists attribute ginkgo’s health benefits to unique compounds called flavone glycosides and ginkgolides, which inhibit development of cardiovascular, inflammatory, and respiratory disorders. Ginkgo is a strong antioxidant—it directs its free-radical scavenging activity to the brain, central nervous system, and cardiovascular system. This is what makes it promising in the treatment of age-related declines of brain function.
A typical dose is three capsules containing at least 40 mg of standardized extract daily. It must be used for six to eight weeks to produce results.
Ginkgo can cause gastrointestinal upset, headaches, or skin ¬allergies.

Depression-St.-John’s-wort (Hypericum perforatum)

You may have heard the news: St.-John’s-wort can offer the benefits of prescription antidepressants without the side effects. It is the dried flowering top of a plant native to Europe; in some parts of the United States, it grows like a weed.
During the Middle Ages, remarkable and even mystical properties were attributed to St.-John’s-wort. By the nineteenth century, U.S. physicians used it as a mild sedative and, in 1997, St.-John’s-wort was the focus of national attention after ABC’s news program 20/20 reported on the herb’s ability to quell depression.
At least twenty-three controlled studies involving more than 1,800 outpatients show that it works. In one recent study of 105 outpatients with mild to moderate depression or temporary depressive moods, 67 percent of those taking St.-John’s-wort improved, while only 28 percent of those taking a placebo did. Those taking the herb reported feeling less sad, hopeless, helpless, useless, and fearful.
For capsules and other products standardized to 0.3 percent hypericin, the recommended dose is 300 mg three times daily. St.-John’s-wort takes time to work, though—allow six weeks of continuous use. To make a tea, steep 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of the dried herb in a cup of hot water for 10 minutes, then drink. The recommended daily dose for a tincture is 3 to 4 droppersful twice daily.
Hypericin from the flowers may cause people with fair skin to break out in hives or blisters upon exposure to sunlight. If you take St.-John’s-wort, stay out of the sun and the tanning salon.
Colds

Echinacea-(Echinacea angustifolia, E. pallida, E. purpurea)
Few of us don’t know this herb, which is now one of the foremost cold medicines on the market.
Native Americans of the prairie used echinacea more than any other plant to cure ailments ranging from colds to cancer. It was the best-selling medicinal plant in the United States until the 1920s, when antibiotics began to replace it. But in Europeit has been used throughout the twentieth century; in 1993, German physicians prescribed echinacea more than 2.5 million times.
Research shows that echinacea enhances the activity of white blood cells and other specialized immune system cells. It increases their ability to attack foreign invaders such as cold or flu viruses and helps accelerate healing if infection already exists.
No single chemical component has been identified as causing echinacea’s medicinal action. A 1997 controlled clinical study involving 120 volunteers in Swedenshowed that daily treatment with the juice of fresh flowering E. purpurea at the first sign of cold symptoms inhibits development of colds, and, if a cold is in progress, cuts the duration of the illness in half.
A typical dose is up to nine 300 to 400 mg capsules or 60 drops of a tincture three times daily. Use at the first sign of cold or flu; take continuously for two weeks.
People allergic to members of the aster family, such as ragweed, may also be allergic to echinacea. The German government recommends that it not be used in cases of diseases of the immune system, including multiple sclerosis and HIV infection.

Flu-Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis, S. nigra)

Elderberry comes from the honeysuckle family. Medicinally, elder fruit from the North American S. canadensis and elder flower from the European S. nigra are used. American herbalists combine the dried flowers of S. canadensis with peppermint to treat fevers and colds. Native Americans used a tea made from the plant’s inner bark to induce vomiting; Europeans used black elderberry to treat colds and fevers.
Most of the chemical research on elderberry involves black elderberry. Current interest in this species stems from the research of Israeli scientist Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, who, along with her colleagues at Hadassah University MedicalCenter in Jerusalem, developed an elderberry extract standardized to contain three flavonoids. In a 1993 clinical study performed during a flu outbreak in Israel, she found that the extract reduces the severity and duration of flu symptoms compared to a placebo. Apparently, the extract’s compounds inhibit the ability of the flu virus to enter cells, and thus disarm the virus’s ability to infect.
The Germans prescribe elderberry flower to induce sweating in order to treat fevers and increase bronchial secretions associated with full-blown colds.
A typical dose is up to six 500 to 600 mg capsules daily or 40 drops of tincture every four hours. To make a tea, simmer 2 to 3 teaspoons of dried flowers in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes and drink up to three times daily.
Safe use of elder always relates to the dried or cooked fruits and flowers. When fresh, all plant parts can produce allergic or other adverse reactions.
